Macular Degeneration

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, which is often also called AMD, is an eye disease that can result in significant loss of vision. There are two different kinds of macular degeneration, which are wet AMD and dry AMD. It's important to know which one of these you have because the options for managing and treating them are very different. While dry AMD typically occurs in older people, wet AMD can occur at any age.

How Is This Condition Treated?

Wet macular degeneration can be treated with eye injections and other methods that can stop or greatly slow the progression of the disease. Unfortunately, dry macular degeneration doesn't have this option. There are vitamins and supplements used that may slow the progression in some people, but there's currently no way to stop the progression or reverse any damage that's already occurred.

Does Eye Disease Management Help?

No matter what type of AMD you have, eye disease management can still help. As part of an overall optometry focus, managing your disease can mean it will progress more slowly. That gives you the best chance at good vision for as long as possible and helps you adjust to the changes that occur as you lose some vision over time.

What Will an Optometrist Do?

An optometrist will help you manage your disease and discuss the eye care options you have. There are also new treatments and options appearing all the time, so you want to work with a professional who can recommend new ideas to you as they come to light. Then, you can get the best help for your eye disease and protect your vision for the future.
